12 Days of Christmas: How to Transform Your Furniture to New Decor (Holiday DIY)

Merry Christmas everyone!  I hope you spent your Christmas day the exactly how you wanted, in good company (yourself included).  As you know, “FLLS 12 Days of Christmas” was delayed due to my short stint with the cold/flu.  Be we’re back in the swing of things and continuing tonight with some more fun content and holiday inspiration at home.  Let’s get into it!

Today we’re talking a DIY transformation of your old pieces to create new decor … but with paint!

Much love to my instastory tribe on Instagram (@faithlovelifeandstyle) for your votes on this DIY project.  It turned out so well and I am so excited to finally reveal it!

Once I began to pull out my holiday decor this year, I started toying with the idea of an all-white theme Christmas decor.  I imagined all white with pops of rose gold and blush pink.  Most of the pieces in my living room are white, grey or neutral-toned except for the console table at hand.  So it seemed attainable that I could achieve my holiday decor goal.  However, purchasing new furniture wasn’t in the budget.

It got even more serious when I pulled out all of my holiday decor for a run-through of what I had to use.  Again, no extra spending allowed.  I was like “this console table has to go.”  The popular black-brown IKEA color just wasn’t hitting a high note for me.  So decided to paint it.

I won’t lie.  I had a few moments of second-guessing my decision to paint it and I even re-positioned it as a media console, just beneath where my TV would be mounted.  Although it seemed like a great setup, the color just wasn’t doing it for me.  And so, I did what I had to do.

Let’s say one last goodbye to this gorgeous espresso brown.

Paining Tools

For my painting tools and supplies, I headed over to The Home Depot with a strict budget and was sure to stick to it.  Here’s what I got:

  • 1 gal. Ultra Pure White Semi-Gloss Enamel Low Odor Interior Paint and Primer in One
  • 9 ft. x 12 ft. 0.7 mil Drop Cloth (3-Pack)
  • 8-Piece High-Density Polyester Knit Paint Tray Kit

I chose my paint in an ultra pure white semi-gloss to ensure that the table’s finished color wasn’t dull or susceptible to scuff or marks.  Although it’s not located in a high-traffic area, over time, it will be open to more wear and tear.  And so having a glossier finish allows you to wipe spots or marks clean without less hassle.  The glossier, the easier to clean and maintain.  I also went with one gallon because a quart wouldn’t be enough (the Home Depot doesn’t carry half-gallon) and two quarts cost about the same as one gallon.

I also purchased a paint kit which pretty much includes everything you’ll need to tackle a small paint job except drop cloths.  The paint kit includes a 9 in. metal tray with ladder lock legs, two 3/8 in. pylam roller covers for smooth surface painting, a 9 In. professional quality roller frame, a 2 in. paint brush for all paints, a paint can opener, and a 3 in. trim roller cover and 3 in. frame.  And finally, I purchased a 3-pack of drop cloths to cover the floor surface beneath the console table as well as nearby furniture pieces that I didn’t want to move out of the living room.

And now for the final reaveal.

The Finished Product

Same console table … with a whole new holiday vibe!  What do you think?  Doesn’t it look like new?

I placed the the original sheet of glass back on top for more glam and noticed a few spot (see behind vase) that needed to dry for longer than the 48 hours.  I think that next time, I’ll sand and buff the surface to ensure that the paint is fully absorbed.  But the plus is that the marks only responded to the pressure of the glass.  Once the glass was lifted and shifted a bit, the dots completely disappeared.  Problem solved.

I absolutely love it and I cannot wait to show you how it blends right into the entire space and my holiday decor.  Hint hint!

Anyway, thank you for tuning in and for coming back for more of the “FLLS 12 Days of Christmas” fun.  I really appreciate it!  Again, happy holidays and season’s greetings to you and your family!
